The Lure of Loch Ness
I’ve always been drawn to the allure of Loch Ness – the mysterious depths, the rugged Highland landscape, and the promise of adventure. As a bonafide water enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to experience this iconic Scottish landmark firsthand. So, I packed my swimsuit, grabbed my trusty water shoes, and headed off to the Loch Ness Shores campsite, eager to dive into the wild and wonderful world of swimming and water sports.
Embracing the Cold
When I first arrived, I’ll admit, I was a bit apprehensive about the chilly waters of Loch Ness. After all, as the Visit Inverness Loch Ness blog pointed out, the loch maintains an average temperature of only around 5 degrees Celsius, even on the hottest summer days. But hey, I’m no stranger to a little cold water – I’ve been known to take the plunge in the North Sea a time or two.
So, I decided to take it slow, easing my way into the loch and allowing my body to gradually acclimate to the brisk temperature. I have to say, once I got over the initial shock, there was something incredibly invigorating about swimming in those frigid waters, surrounded by the majestic Highlands. From the crystal-clear waters of Loch Duntelchaig to the warm, peaty goodness of Loch Mhor, there was no shortage of hidden gems to discover.
One of my personal favorites was Loch Ceo Glais, which the blog described as the “warmest loch in the Highlands.” Now, I’m not one to shy away from a little chilly water, but there’s something to be said for a swim in toasty 15-degree temperatures. And the scenery surrounding Loch Ceo Glais and its neighbor, Loch Duntelchaig, was simply breathtaking.
Pushing Boundaries
Of course, I couldn’t visit the Highlands without trying my hand at some more adventurous water sports. So, I signed up for a Loch Ness sailing and swimming experience, courtesy of the Loch Ness by Jacobite team.
The thought of sailing across the legendary loch and then plunging into its depths had my heart racing with excitement. As I stepped aboard the boat and glided across the water, the famous Urquhart Castle came into view, casting an impressive silhouette against the rugged landscape. And when the time came to take the leap, I’ll admit, I hesitated for a moment, but the lure of the adventure was just too strong to resist.
With a deep breath and a leap of faith, I found myself swimming in the heart of Loch Ness, surrounded by the mystery and majesty of this iconic Scottish landmark. It was a one-of-a-kind experience that left me feeling exhilarated, empowered, and a little bit closer to the spirit of the Highlands.

But the fun didn’t stop there. As I explored the Loch Ness Shores campsite and the surrounding area, I discovered a vibrant community of fellow water enthusiasts. From the local wild swimming events to the helpful tips and advice shared by the campsite staff, I felt a real sense of camaraderie among those who shared my passion for the great outdoors.
One event that caught my eye was the Kessock Swim, where brave souls embark on a challenging open-water swim across the Inverness Firth. The thought of tackling those salty sea waves had me intrigued, and I couldn’t help but imagine the rush of adrenaline and the breathtaking views as I made my way to the North Kessock shore.
Diving into the Future
As I reluctantly packed up my swimsuit and water shoes, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of sadness at the thought of leaving this watery wonderland behind. But I know that the memories and experiences I’ve gained here will stay with me forever.
The Loch Ness Shores campsite has truly become a home away from home, a place where I can indulge my love of swimming and water sports while surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands. And who knows, maybe next time I’ll be brave enough to take on the Kessock Swim or even explore the depths of Loch Ness in search of the elusive Nessie herself!
