The Call of the Highlands
I find there really is no better way to escape the stresses, limitations, and concrete jungles of city life than to pitch up a tent and cozy up between layers of blankets and pillows, with nothing other than fresh air between you and the sounds of the birds singing. Last weekend, I had the most delightful experience camping in the Scottish Highlands as part of a weekend basecamp adventure.
My friend Lydia and I packed up (including all the fairy lights and pillows we could find) and headed to an area of outstanding natural beauty located just a couple hours’ drive outside of Glasgow. We pitched up at YHA Holmbury St. Mary’s in the heart of the Surrey Hills, and it was perfect. For me, camping really does take you back to basics – a chance to reset and rediscover the simple pleasures in life.
Unplugging and Reconnecting
We so often get lost in a world that has become so technologically advanced that we forget to just be present and appreciative of what we already have. Camping and being in the wild gives me the perspective and time to refocus my mind. During my weekend in the Highlands, I found myself excited over things that I haven’t been excited about since I was a child – the rustling of leaves, the laughter of kids playing, the glow of a campfire under the starry night sky.
It felt bittersweet in a way. These pure joys that nature provides are so accessible, yet we so often overlook their importance in our daily lives, trapped in a cycle of screens and schedules. Camping allows me to hit the reset button and remember what life is really about. There’s a sense of freedom and simplicity that I crave, and the Scottish Highlands provide the perfect canvas for that experience.
Embracing the Adventure
While initially, the idea of camping alone in the Highlands may seem daunting, I’m here to tell you that it is an adventure well worth embarking on. Sure, there are some precautions to take and logistics to consider, but with a little preparation, the rewards far outweigh the challenges.
My friend Lydia and I didn’t want to carry too much on our backs, so we opted for a more lightweight setup – no tent, just a rain fly to sleep under. And you know what? It was perfect. The weather dipped down to a comfortable low 60s at night, and we were cocooned in our cozy nest, lulled to sleep by the symphony of nature.
The journey itself was also a highlight. We encountered a mixture of well-trodden paths and more rugged terrain, but the views at every turn were breathtaking. From the glistening lochs to the rolling hills dotted with sheep, the Scottish Highlands truly feel like a world unto themselves. And the sense of accomplishment upon reaching our campsite, just in time for a golden hour sunset over the beach, was unparalleled.
Embracing the Unknown
Of course, camping in a remote area does come with its fair share of uncertainties. We ran into a few people on the trail, but for the most part, the latter half of our hike was gloriously isolated. And while that sense of solitude was exactly what we craved, it also required us to be extra vigilant and prepared.
Thankfully, we had done our research and packed accordingly. A water purifier, first aid kit, and basic camping essentials ensured we were ready for anything. And even when my hiking boot fell apart on the way back, a little duct tape saved the day.
The most challenging part, though, was definitely the physical toll. I consider myself to be in pretty good shape, but by the end of the second day, my legs were screaming. That lactic acid build-up is no joke! But you know what they say – no pain, no gain. And the pain was 100% worth it for the memories and the life-affirming connection with nature.
The Perfect Escape
If you’re looking for a true escape from the stresses of everyday life, I can’t recommend camping in the Scottish Highlands enough. Sure, there’s an element of the unknown, but that’s part of the adventure. And with a little preparation and an open mind, you’ll be rewarded with an experience that will feed your soul.
I may be biased, but I truly believe that Loch Ness Shores is the perfect basecamp for your Highland camping adventure. With stunning views of the iconic loch, well-equipped facilities, and a wealth of hiking trails right at your doorstep, it’s the ultimate escape into nature. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, grab your tent, and get ready to experience the magic of the Scottish Highlands.
