Uncovering the Charms of Fort Augustus
As I watched the majestic stags gallop across the russet-colored landscape, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. This was the magic of the Scottish Highlands, a world far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And nestled in the heart of this breathtaking region lies Loch Ness Shores, a campsite that promises to immerse you in the very essence of Highland hospitality.
Our journey to this enchanting destination began with a scenic drive through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, where the vibrant autumnal hues seemed to dance across the rolling hills. As we approached the village of Fort Augustus, situated at the southwest end of Loch Ness, the anticipation grew. This quaint Highland town, with its gift shops, eateries, and the impressive Caledonian Canal, was the perfect gateway to the wonders that lay ahead.
Loch Ness, of course, is synonymous with the fabled Loch Ness Monster, and our stay at Loch Ness Shores provided the perfect opportunity to embark on a Nessie-spotting adventure. As we boarded the Cruise Loch Ness, the rain started to pour, but that didn’t dampen our spirits. We found a cozy spot near the bar and sonar screens, sipping on a warming dram of whisky as we listened to the entertaining tales of the Loch Ness Monster.
Discovering the Lovat Loch Ness
Our accommodations at Loch Ness Shores were no less enchanting. The Lovat Loch Ness, a four-star, eco-conscious hotel, stood on the outskirts of Fort Augustus, its historic roots dating back to the Jacobite era. As we stepped through the doors, we were greeted with a warm Highland welcome, and our room in the annexe proved to be a true haven.
The room was bright and modern, with a large, comfortable bed and an en-suite bathroom equipped with luxurious toiletries and underfloor heating. But the true delight was the private gated yard and outdoor seating area, which our furry companion, Casper, couldn’t wait to explore. The Lovat had thought of everything, even providing dog bowls, a towel for wiping muddy paws, and treats – a sure-fire way to win over our canine companion.
Dinner that evening at the Lovat’s Brasserie was a culinary adventure in itself. From the delectable roasted tomato butter that oozed with flavor to the perfectly executed dishes, each course left us in a state of gastronomic bliss. The champagne slid down effortlessly, and the lemon cheesecake with its artful presentation was a true masterpiece.
Embracing the Great Outdoors
As much as we relished the comforts of the Lovat Loch Ness, the great outdoors beckoned. After a hearty breakfast, we set out to explore the South Loch Ness Trail, a scenic path that promised breathtaking vistas. The landscape was vast and rugged, with heather-covered mountains and moorland as far as the eye could see.
As we climbed the rocky knoll, we were rewarded with a stunning view of Loch Tarff and the ancient crannogs that dotted its surface. The sound of the rut, the bellowing calls of the stags, rang out through the hills, adding to the sense of being in a truly wild and untamed place.
It was in these moments, surrounded by the dramatic Scottish scenery, that all our cares seemed to float away. The rugged beauty of the Highlands had a way of centering the mind and nourishing the soul. And as we reluctantly tore ourselves away, we knew that we’d only scratched the surface of the wonders that awaited us at Loch Ness Shores.
Embracing the Highland Spirit
As our time at Loch Ness Shores drew to a close, we were waved off with wishes for a safe journey, clutching a bag of delicious home-baked raisin cookies. The Lovat Loch Ness had become more than just a hotel – it had embodied the very essence of Highland hospitality, with its friendly staff, relaxed ambiance, and exceptional food.
In the days that followed, the memories of our time at Loch Ness Shores lingered, and we found ourselves eagerly anticipating a return. The striking landscapes, the mythical legends, and the warm embrace of the local community had all left an indelible mark on our hearts. And as we plan our next adventure to this enchanting corner of Scotland, we know that the Loch Ness Shores will be the perfect home base from which to explore the wonders of the Highlands.
